‘The Ego’ – Al Nafs

by ilmwear

It’s the ego, which makes me that hero

The ego, that makes me turn evil

The ego, that ruins my people

The ego, that makes me so lethal

The ego that makes me so feeble

Unequal and feeling so cheap so

I cry, I lie and keep it all inside…

My ego means I’m never in the wrong

My ego breathes the fuel of attention

My ego leans my hand on oppression

My ego bleeds the milk of submission

My ego, cogito ergo sum –

My ego that’ll lead me to Jahannam

My ego that takes me from The One

Ego sum qui sum – al Islam

Notes:

  • The phrase cogito ergo sum (trans. "I think, therefore I am") is attributed to the mathematician and philosopher René Descartes. With this theory, he systematically doubted all that could conceivably be doubted. However, this lead him to conclude that the one thing that he could not doubt was his own existence.

  • Ego sum qui sum (I am who I am) is a reference to the passage Exodus 3:14 found in the Bible which claims:

God said to Moses, "I am who I am. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: 'I AM has sent me to you.' "

Secondly according to Aimé Solignac’s commentary on Augustine’s Enarrationes, in connection with the term idipsum; he shows a link with the metaphysical: meaning Being or existence in the precise meaning; Being unchangeable; Being everlasting.
